While it goes without saying that professional coaching supports its client's career, helping them to land a job, obtain a promotion or make a successful career change, life coaching focuses on broader aspects of well-being and personal development. It aims to help people clarify their aspirations, overcome blockages and develop the self-confidence they need to move forward in life with greater serenity and motivation.

But what exactly can one expect from such support? How does it work, and what are its benefits? How does it differ from psychological therapy?

What is life coaching ?

It draws inspiration from humanistic psychology, which emphasizes personal growth and the development of individual potential.It also integrates neuroscience, which provides insights into how the brain functions and how thoughts and emotions influence behavior.

Personal development is another major influence, offering practical tools to enhance self confidence, motivation, and emotional management. Additionally, sports performance techniques have helped shape certain coaching methods, particularly in mental preparation and resource optimization.

Some of the most commonly used approaches today include Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), which helps reframe thought and behavior patterns through language and perception. Transactional Analysis aids in analyzing interactions between individuals and understanding relational dynamics. Other methods, such as cardiac coherence techniques, mindfulness, and cognitive-behavioral techniques, are sometimes incorporated to address specific client needs.
Some coaches use tools like visualization to boost motivation and clarify objectives. Others incorporate personality tests or self-assessment questionnaires as frameworks to help clients gain deeper self awareness and understanding.

Differences Between Life Coaching and Therapy

Life coaching and therapy have distinct approaches. Therapy delves into the past to understand and treat psychological or behavioral disorders. It often falls within a medical or healing framework and can be a long-term process.

Life coaching, on the other hand, is future-focused and aims to achieve specific goals. Coaching sessions are structured within a defined timeframe and target concrete, measurable results. A coach does not treat mental health disorders. Instead, they work with individuals in good mental health who seek to improve their daily lives and overall well-being. The coaching process aims to boost motivation, overcome obstacles, and help individuals fully unlock their potential.
